South Korean president declares martial law, overruled by parliament

WASHINGTON, Dec. 5 (ZFJ) — South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol declared martial law on the night of Tuesday, Dec. 3, only for it to be overruled by the National Assembly several hours later. In an unannounced press conference at 10:23 p.m. on Tuesday, Yoon accused the opposition Democratic Party of “an obvious anti-state act that plots insurrection” for attempting to impeach multiple government officials and cutting public safety budgets.

Aug. 21 (ZFJ) — President Joe Biden, South Korea’s President Yoon Suk Yeol, and Japan’s Prime Minister Fumio Kishida agreed to increase defense and economic cooperation among their countries at a Camp David summit on Friday, Aug. 18. This meeting is the first-ever standalone summit between the leaders of Japan, South Korea, and the United States. Japan and South Korea continue to have disputes over former Imperial Japan’s colonial rule from 1910-1945.
