Gas odor prompts evacuation at J.P. Stevens High School

EDISON, N.J., Feb. 1 (ZFJ) — A suspected gas leak resulted in the evacuation of J.P. Stevens High School students and staff on Thursday, Feb. 1, according to the school district. An odor of gas near the art and music wing and in the back of the building caused the evacuation, which, according to a ZFJ reporter, began around the start of third period. The Edison Fire Department and Elizabethtown Gas Company concluded that a construction crew hit an inactive gas line that still had residual gas remaining in it, resulting in the odor, according to a statement by Edison Township Public Schools.

Authorities began investigating allegations of neglect on Jan. 3, according to the criminal complaint against Raini. According to the aide for the developmentally delayed female, the woman is transported by van back to her residence twice a week.

NEW YORK, Dec. 31 (ZFJ) — The New York Times filed a federal copyright infringement lawsuit on Dec. 27 against Microsoft and OpenAI for using its news articles unauthorized to train generative artificial intelligence models. The Times says it initiated negotiations with Microsoft and OpenAI in April 2023, but no licensing agreement, like in the case of The Associated Press, was reached, leading to the lawsuit. “Defendants insist that their conduct is protected as ‘fair use’ because their unlicensed use of copyrighted content to train GenAI models serves a new ‘transformative’ purpose,” wrote The Times in its civil complaint.

FDA approves two sickle cell disease gene therapies, one based on CRISPR

Dec. 30 (ZFJ) — The U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved two cell-based gene therapies, Casgevy and Lyfgenia, to treat sickle cell disease in patients 12 years and older, the agency announced on Dec. 8, 2023. Casgevy is the first FDA-approved treatment to use CRISPR/Cas9 gene-editing technology. Sickle cell disease is a group of inherited blood disorders. It affects about 100,000 Americans, is most common in African Americans, and also affects Hispanic Americans.
