EDISON, N.J., Jan. 11 (ZFJ) — Senior Ghelsey Go has become the seventh girl and ninth player overall to score 1,000 points in basketball at Edison High School.

She scored 29 points in the varsity game against JFK on Saturday, Jan. 6, achieving the milestone after four years in high school basketball.

“I can’t even lie, when I scored the last points, my mind just went blank. I was like, what happens next, what’s going to happen next, and we still had a game to play, so I don’t think I really celebrated right away,” Go said. “Everyone started rushing towards me and pushing me around and everyone started screaming and I was like, oh my god, it actually happened, like the moment I had been dreaming about, it actually happened.”

“In some ways, it was kinda anticlimactic because I don’t know what I expected, but, like, it was just less than that, but it was just so much, and I was so, so happy that everyone was there to support me and that everyone was so excited—like, as excited as me.”

Scoring 1,000 points has been one of Go’s goals since her freshman year, and she is glad to have finally achieved it.

“The thought that I am one of the few people in the school that did score 1,000 points is really exciting to me, and I’m really proud of myself about it,” she said.

Varsity girls’ basketball head coach Francis Eckert said that he is extremely proud of her “amazing accomplishment.”

“I had Ghelsey since she attended Lindeneau Elementary, and seeing how hard she has worked the last 10 years on and off the court is what makes this so special,” he said. “Ghelsey also played a limited amount of games during a COVID year, so she has actually achieved 1,000 plus points in less games than most athletes.”

“She’s a great person, athlete, and teammate.”

Edison High Athletic Director Dave Sandaal also praised Go for her achievement.

“Ghelsey exemplifies what it is to be an Edison High School student athlete. Being the seventh girl in school history in girls basketball to score over 1,000 points is a tremendous achievement,” he said. “It comes on the heels of her having a great career as our soccer goalie on the girls soccer team, so she’s the consummate Edison High School student athlete and she, to me, exemplifies #whatsgreataboutedisonhigh.
