Edison police Lieutenant Donald Ship dies at 38

EDISON, N.J., Aug. 11 (ZFJ) — Edison police Lieutenant Donald Ship, 38, of Piscataway, died on Wednesday, July 10.

New Jersey 101.5 reported that Police Chief Thomas Bryan told them that Ship died at home following a “short illness.”

“Lieutenant Ship grew up in Edison and dedicated his entire life and career to giving back to the community that raised him,” said the Edison Police Department on social media.

Ship began his career in law enforcement as a Kean University police officer before he transferred to the Edison Police Department on Jan. 5, 2011. He was assigned to the patrol bureau and became a field training officer.

On Oct. 1, 2020, he was promoted to sergeant and tasked with relaunching the Community Oriented Policing Unit.

“He worked tirelessly and with great enthusiasm to bridge the gap between the police department and the community,” reads Ship’s obituary. “His efforts touched the hearts of many as he spearheaded countless charitable events that provided warm meals, comfortable furniture, and Christmas toys to families in need.”

“Lieutenant Ship was known for his ability to find solutions to everyone’s problems and his comforting, warm smile.”

On Feb. 14, 2023, Ship was promoted to lieutenant and became Patrol Squad A’s watch commander.
