EDISON, N.J., Aug. 12 (ZFJ) — Edison Firefighter Howard Chaim Tarlow, 47, died on Wednesday, July 10, reported the Edison Firefighters Association, International Association of Fire Fighters (IAFF) Local 1197.

MyCentralJersey.com reported that township officials said that Tarlow died unexpectedly at home.

Tarlow began his career in fire services when he joined the Highland Park Volunteer Fire Department in 2008 “after expressing to a friend he wanted to give back to the community,” said IAFF Local 1197 on social media.

Tarlow then transferred to Raritan Engine Company 1 in 2010 to serve his hometown.

He was appointed a career firefighter in Edison on Oct. 9, 2012, and assigned to C Platoon. During his service, he earned a bachelor’s degree in fire science from New Jersey City University.

“Firefighter Tarlow was known for his attention to detail at work and his witty sense of humor,” said IAFF Local 1197.

In 2021, he became IAFF Local 1197’s delegate to the Professional Firefighters Association of N.J. (PFANJ) and worked with state labor leaders.

On July 1, 2022, Tarlow was elected treasurer of IAFF Local 1197. The union says he worked to improve the union’s financial strength.

He was also deeply involved in the union’s community outreach, coordinating participation in Edison’s annual Halloween Trunk and Treat and Winter Wonderland events as well as collecting toys for the U.S. Marine Corps’ Toys for Tots campaign.

He also administered the union’s charity account and regularly sent donations to community organizations including Hands of Hope, Edison Little League, Kiddie Keep Well Camp, and the Lakeview School, said IAFF Local 1197.

Tarlow’s son Mark followed his father’s footsteps and was appointed an Edison firefighter on Oct. 1, 2020.
