One dead, one injured after Route 1 crash in Edison

EDISON, N.J., July 30 (ZFJ) — One motorcyclist was killed and one motorcyclist was seriously injured in a crash at the intersection of Route 1 North and Old Post Road in Edison on Sunday, July 28.

On Sunday, at about 8:13 p.m., authorities responded to the intersection after receiving a report of a multi-vehicle crash, according to a press release from the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office.

Police located Alexander Teshima Chong, 44, of Belleville, who had been operating a motorcycle at the time of the collision. He had sustained serious injuries and was pronounced deceased at the scene.

Another motorcyclist, a 44-year-old male, suffered serious injuries and was taken to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital.

Detectives determined in an initial investigation that the two motorcycles turned on to Route 1 North from Old Post Road and crashed into the back of a BMW SUV. The 44-year-old motorcyclist was ejected off his motorcycle.

The BMW SUV driver sustained no injuries and was released from the scene.

An Edison Nixle alert reported at 8:24 p.m. on Sunday that the intersection was shut down. A followup Nixle alert at 1:42 a.m. on Monday, July 29, reported that Route 1 had been reopened.
