COLLEGE PARK, Md., Oct. 5 (ZFJ) — Dr. Dominique Mwepu, 53, was fatally struck by a car on Monday, Sept. 30, according to the Montgomery County Police Department.

At about 7:55 p.m., county police officers from the 5th district and fire rescue personnel responded to reports of a collision involving a blue Honda Prelude and a pedestrian at the intersection of Frederick Road and High Point Drive.

Mwepu sustained life-threatening injuries and was pronounced dead on the scene.

Mwepu was a lecturer for the Department of Hearing and Speech Sciences at the University of Maryland, College Park.

A GoFundMe fundraiser set up to support his family says that Mwepu had been returning after dropping off a U-Haul truck used to move his family to a new home when he had been struck. Mwepu leaves behind his wife Mireille and son Joshua.

A memorial service will be held for Mwepu at the UMD Garden Chapel on Wednesday, Oct. 9, from 12 p.m. to 2 p.m., to “honor and remember his remarkable life and spirit,” according to an email sent to HESP undergraduate students.

MoCo police say that the driver remained on the scene and is cooperating with the investigation.

The investigation is active and ongoing, and anyone who may have witnessed the collision is asked to contact Collision Reconstruction Unit detectives at (240) 773-6620.
