EDISON, N.J., April 4 (ZFJ) — Marcus Wright, 27, of Beaufort, South Carolina, was sentenced to life in prison without parole for the murder of an Edison Speedway gas station employee that occurred on Dec. 20, 2018, announced Middlesex County Prosecutor Yolanda Ciccone.
Wright was convicted on Sept. 12, 2023, of the murder of John Bertram, 38, of the Fords section of Woodbridge; armed robbery; conspiracy to commit armed robbery; and possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose.
Accomplice Olya Quinnam, 26, of Beaufort, South Carolina, pleaded guilty on Sept. 26, 2019, to one count of first-degree armed robbery.
In a two-week trial beginning on Sept. 5, 2023, Middlesex County Assistant Prosecutors Lynne Seborowski and Caitlin Lavery established that Wright entered the Speedway gas station on Dec. 20, 2018, and held up clerk John Bertram with a handgun.
Bertram gave Wright the money that was in the register. Wright then fired his gun, killing Bertram.
Quinnam accompanied Wright but waited outside as the robbery was in progress.
On March 4, 2024, Superior Court Judge Andrea G. Carter sentenced Wright to life in prison without parole for the first-degree murder charge. He received concurrent sentences for the remaining charges of first-degree felony murder, second-degree conspiracy to commit robbery, first-degree armed robbery, second-degree unlawful possession of a weapon, and second-degree possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose.
The case was investigated by officers from the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office and Edison Police Department.
