EDISON, N.J., June 30 (ZFJ) — Edison police opened a substation in Menlo Park Mall on May 24. It is located in the former Jos A. Bank store between Barnes & Noble and a parking garage.

Police officials celebrated the opening, which Deputy Chief Robert Dudash said had been “a brainchild of the police department and the mall for a lot of years now.”

“This substation will actually enhance our services to the public and to the mall,” said Chief Thomas Bryan at the ribbon cutting. “For example, if we have a shoplifter, instead of taking a police officer off the road for two to three hours to process them back at headquarters, we can do that right here and get our officers back out on the road right away.”

Simon Property Group, the mall’s owner, expressed appreciation for the police presence at Menlo.

“We are so appreciative of the Edison Police Department to keep us all safe, and we are thrilled that you are joining us on property,” said Prim Prasapairin, director of marketing and business development at the mall.

Patch Edison reported that police have been receiving an increasing volume of calls from the mall, with nearly 700 in 2023—an average of about two per day—and over 250 calls in the first five months of this year. It also quoted Bryan in saying that there will be “command-level presence” supervising the substation.

The mall substation is the second established this year. Edison police previously opened a substation on Oak Tree Road in March following a violent carjacking attempt at Patel Brothers that resulted in the arrest of three juvenile suspects.
